What is Polyurea ?
The chemical explanation is, polyurea is the result of a chemical reaction between a part of aromatic or aliphatic isocyanic and a part of an amine or a mixture (poly-amine).
These 2-component systems are commonly referred to as “high-velocity coatings” due to the very rapid reaction they have (2-15 seconds).
From a chemical point of view, the reputation of Polyuria is based on the fact that the reaction is done without catalysts, in contrast to the polyurethane systems and forms a “membrane” with exceptional properties and durability.
In simple terms, Polyurea is a sprayed protection and insulation material classified in wet membranes, with many different applications and fields of application. In its original form Polyurea is two different liquid components (usually in barrels) which to be mixed and sprayed, special equipment is required, with which the materials are heated and sprayed with high pressure.
For Polyurea there is no “difficult” surface because with the spraying and the fast time drying we do not care whether the surface is horizontal or vertical, flat, curved, polygonal or any other geometric shape. With its elasticity and excellent adhesion it can be applied to almost all-properly prepared-substrates such as concrete (concrete), metal, wood, polyurethane foam, plastic and others.
Key Features of Polyurea
It is a monolithic coating without joints and seams.
It shows high elasticity with systems reaching up to 600%.
It is a low-thickness coating of 2-3mm and does not affect the height of the spaces.
It can be applied to large thicknesses in one application (theoretically unlimited).
It is very fast application in small and large projects and has very fast recovery time in operation.
It has a high abrasion resistance.
It’s impervious to fluids.
It has high resistance to seawater (salt water).
Excellent corrosion protection (does not contain catalysts).
Resistance and durability in many chemicals and acids.
Resistance to a wide range of temperature changes from-30 oC to + 130 oC.
Great resistance to UV radiation.
VOC Free (Volatile organic components-free organic solvents)-helps protect the environment.
It’s almost or completely odorless.
The above characteristics find application in almost all types of polyurea, but depending on the needs of the construction can be used polyurea with even more specific technical characteristics.
